Are you new to Florida? If so, you may be surprised that you are dealing with seasonal allergies in July. Due to the warmer climate, Florida’s allergy season can last almost year-round, depending on the allergen in question. Here are some of the most common allergens you might be experiencing this month.
Grass and Weed Pollens
Most people associate pollen allergens with spring or fall, but in Florida you can experience these seasonal allergies throughout the summer. Some grass and weed pollens are present in Florida during the summer and almost year-round. Mowing lawns, especially where wild grasses and weeds are present, can exacerbate allergy symptoms.
Molds
Florida is a tropical climate and mold counts can be high in the summer months. The humidity, in part due to frequent rains, and heat of the FLorida summer create a natural breeding ground for mold. If you have areas with shaded but moist plant matter or if you have cool dark spaces under trees or along paths, you could see some mold. Mold spores spread much like pollen, and the allergy symptoms can also be similar.
Insect Stings
Although not a seasonal allergen, insect stings occur more often when people are enjoying outdoor activities, such as during the summertime. Patients who have a history of systemic allergic reactions or anaphylaxis to insect stings, such as to wasps or bees, usually need to carry epinephrine and be ready to go to the hospital in case of a severe allergic reaction. A trained allergist can help diagnose and treat stinging insect allergy.
