If eating certain foods causes you discomfort, you may think you are allergic to that food. However, most of the time, these issues are caused by food intolerances instead of true food allergies. Here’s how to tell the difference:
Food allergies cause immune system responses that usually affect multiple body systems, occur immediately, and can be life-threatening. Nuts, seafood, dairy, eggs, and wheat are some of the most common foods that can cause anaphylaxis. Symptoms may include rash or hives, swelling, trouble breathing and wheezing, and vomiting or diarrhea.
Food intolerances usually only involve digestive discomfort and are typically less serious than allergies.
People with food intolerances can often eat a small amount of the offending food without issue or may be able to prevent the discomfort by taking certain medications. Lactase enzyme pills taken just before consuming dairy products for those with lactose intolerance are an example of this.
Food intolerances are commonly caused by:
- Lack of proper enzymes for digestion
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Sensitivity to additives
- Other factors
Only a trained allergist can determine if your problems are a true food allergy or a less serious food intolerance. If you do have a food allergy, your doctor will likely suggest that you carry an epinephrine auto-injector in addition to avoiding the trigger food. They will also educate you in identifying the signs of anaphylaxis and when to use the auto-injector.
If you have a food intolerance, your doctor will suggest avoiding the trigger food, prophylactic medication, or other methods for aiding digestion.
