Eye Drops
If a toddler’s allergy symptoms include itchy, red, and watery eyes, then eye drops can be an effective treatment. Eye drops work by reducing inflammation and blocking histamine release in the eyes. Olopatadine (Pataday®) or Ketotifen (Zaditor®) are eye drop choices for allergies in toddlers
Leukotriene Blockers
There are other prescription medications for allergies in toddlers. One such medication is called montelukast (Singulair®). It comes as a chewable tablet or a packet of granules. Your allergist can let you know if this medication is a good choice for your child.
Allergy Shots and Drops
Allergy shots and drops, also known as immunotherapy, can be an effective long-term treatment for allergies in older toddlers. Allergy shots and drops work by exposing the child too small amounts of the allergen over a period of time, gradually desensitizing their immune system to the allergen.
Allergy shots and drops are typically administered on a regular schedule over a period of several years. While allergy shots and drops can be effective, they do require a significant commitment from both the child and the parents.
