Halloween is a time of joy, costumes, and of course, treats! But for one in 13 children living with food allergies, this festive occasion can pose some challenges. At AllergyTampa.com, we’re dedicated to ensuring that every child can enjoy a safe and inclusive Halloween experience. That’s why we’re shining a light on the Teal Pumpkin Project by FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education).
What is the Teal Pumpkin Project?
The Teal Pumpkin Project is an innovative initiative aimed at making Halloween safer and more inclusive for children with food allergies, intolerances, and other conditions. By placing a teal-colored pumpkin on your doorstep, you’re signaling to the community that you offer not just candy, but also non-food treats that are safe for all little goblins and witches. Let’s come together and make this Halloween memorable for everyone!

Top Tips for a Safe Trick-or-Treating Experience
- Be Prepared
Stock up on safe treats or small toys to swap out any unsafe candies your child might collect.
- Educate
Use candy sorting as a chance to teach your child about hidden allergens and the importance of reading labels.
- Safety First
Implement a no eating while trick-or-treating rule to ensure you can review all food labels.
- Label Awareness
Steer clear of candies without ingredient labels.
- Be Ready
Always have an epinephrine auto-injector on hand, if prescribed.
- Size Matters
Remember, mini or fun-size candies might have different ingredients than the regular versions. Always read labels, no matter what.
- Focus on Fun
Halloween is about more than just candy. Emphasize the joy of dressing up and spending time together.
- The Good Witch Tradition
Let your kids trade their unsafe candies to the “Good Witch” in exchange for small gifts or safe treats (think Tooth Fairy for Halloween candy)
- Plan Ahead
Prepare safe goody bags for neighbors to give to your child. Describe your child’s costume so they know who to look out for.
- Alternative Celebrations
Think about hosting a Halloween party with safe treats, or replace candies with Halloween-themed toys or games.
- Stay Updated
Even if a candy was safe before, ingredients can change. Always read the label.
